The Oldest Swimming Pool in Reykjavík
The story of Sundhöll Reykjavíkur stretches back to the early 1900s when the idea of an indoor pool in Reykjavík was first suggested by town engineer Knud Zimsen. Although initially dismissed, the proposal gained momentum in 1928 when Iceland’s government proposed funding a city pool. Construction began in 1929, under the guidance of renowned architect Guðjón Samúelsson, who initially envisioned a pool reminiscent of traditional Icelandic turf houses.
After years of construction delays due to funding issues, Sundhöll finally opened on March 23, 1937, quickly becoming a beloved community hub. Samúelsson’s work — featuring clean lines, high windows, and Art Deco touches — has stood the test of time, embodying Reykjavík’s architectural evolution. An expansion by VA Arkitektar brought modern outdoor facilities, blending harmoniously with the original design. Today, Sundhöll remains a cherished landmark, drawing nearly a century of swimmers into its geothermal waters.
