Sambíóin Kringlunni, located within Reykjavík's lively Kringlan Shopping Center, has been a cornerstone of Reykjavík cinemas since its establishment in 1996. As the first cinema in Iceland to be integrated into a shopping mall, it introduced a new era of entertainment convenience, drawing inspiration from cinema designs in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Today the cinema has four screening halls, one of which is often mentioned as the best luxury cinema hall in Iceland, and also offers live viewings from the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

The cinema features four screening halls, collectively accommodating up to 757 guests. Each auditorium is equipped with advanced projection systems, including 4K resolution and 3D capabilities, delivering crystal-clear visuals. Ásberg Screening Hall

Ásberg is the name of the luxury VIP screening room at Sambíóin Kringlunni. Named after the family member that started it all, the great great great grandfather of the current owners. This fourth hall was opened in 2023 and is often mentioned as the best luxury hall in the country.

The hall can accommodate 72 people. The seats are first class with all the comforts you can think of, for example heated seats and wireless charging for smartphones. The first row of seats has reclining seats where you lay back and stretch out like on the couch at home. Then at the back of the hall you will find double love seats where couples can snuggle close together and enjoy the show.

When you purchase a ticket to the VIP hall you also get supplies of popcorn and soda, and there is no break during the movie, just like at the VIP hall in Álfabakki.

Outside Kringlan there are many specially marked parking spaces along with good access inside the building. One bathroom is specially marked for the disabled. There are wheelchair spaces in two halls, hall 1 and 2, but in hall 3 a wheelchair can be next to the row of seats where you enter the hall.

Family-Owned since 1937

Sambíó Cinemas holds a notable place in Icelandic cinema history. It's story can be traced back to 1937 when Eyjólfur Ó. Ásberg and his wife Guðný Jónasdóttir began operating a cinema in Keflavík. The first Sambíó cinema officially opened in 1941 and remained operational until October 2024. Their daughter, Elísabet Ásberg, and later, their great great grandchild Guðný Ásberg Björnsdóttir, continued expanding the business.

In 1982 Guðný and her husband Árni Samúelsson, who had taken over the company, opened a second location in Reykjavík. Under the leadership of Árni Samúelsson, who has served as CEO for over 40 years, Sambíóin grew into the major cinema chain it is today, with Samúelsson still serving as CEO and additionally as board member of Cineworld Group PLC.
