Sambíó Cinemas has deep roots in Icelandic cinema, beginning in 1937 when Eyjólfur Ó. Ásberg and his wife Guðný Jónasdóttir opened a cinema in Keflavík. The first official Sambíó cinema opened in 1941 and operated until October 2024. Their legacy continued with their daughter, Elísabet Ásberg, and later their great-great-grandchild, Guðný Ásberg Björnsdóttir, who, with her husband Árni Samúelsson, expanded the chain to Reykjavík in 1982. Samúelsson led Sambíóin for over 40 years and remains CEO, with the company now owned by their children
