A part of the Sambíó Cinema Family

The Sambíó Cinemas has a historical significance in Iceland's cinema history. Going back to 1941 when the first Sambíó Cinema was built in Keflavík, close to Keflavík International Airport, by Eyjólfur Ó. Ásberg (b. 1891, d. 1954). Ásberg was a baker, shopkeeper, and ran both a fishing company and a wholesale in Keflavík together with his wife Guðný Jónasdóttir, who also ran a convenience store in the couple's home. They started operating a cinema in 1937 in Keflavík and later, in 1941, opened the first Sambíó cinema. That cinema operated until October 2024, when it permanently closed its doors.

Elísabet Ásberg, the daughter of the two cinema pioneers, later took over the operation of the cinema together with her husband, Björn G. Snæbjörnsson, and their two children Guðný and Eyjólfur Ásberg, named after their grandparents.

The great great grandchild of Ásberg, Guðný Ásberg Björnsdóttir, took over the operation of the cinema together with her husband Árni Samúelsson. In 1982 they opened the second location at Álfabakki in Reykjavík.

Together the couple, built Sambíóin into what we see today, with Samúelsson leading the company for over 40 years. Although the company is now owned by their children, Samúelsson is still CEO of the company while also on the board of Cineworld Group PLC.
