What to Expect: Icelandic Pool Etiquette

Before entering any Icelandic swimming pool, visitors are required to shower thoroughly without swimsuits in the designated shower areas - body is washed with soap and hair is rinsed off with water. This is a matter of both hygiene and respect, as Icelanders take cleanliness seriously when it comes to their public pools. That’s also why shaving in public showers is completely prohibited.

Some pools nowadays do offer private showers and changing rooms to accommodate tourists. Showering together in the nude is completely normal in Iceland, a culture people are brought up with.

In the mornings you’ll find people early at the pools going for a swim before work, and discussing the latest news and debating politics in the hot tubs. In the evening you’ll often find families going for a swim and play before bed.

Ice Cream & Hot Dogs

A trip to a Reykjavík pool, or any Icelandic pool in fact, often includes a delicious stop for ice cream or a classic Icelandic hot dog (pylsur) at Pylsuvagninn hot dog stand, often found outside public pools. Near many pools, visitors can find ice cream stands offering a range of flavors, perfect for cooling down after a hot tub session. Icelandic ice cream is known for its rich, creamy texture and is a favorite treat year-round, even in winter. For a savory option, try a traditional Icelandic hot dog, typically made with a mix of lamb, beef, and pork, and served with toppings like crispy onions, sweet mustard, and remoulade. Grabbing a hot dog or ice cream after a swim has become a beloved tradition among locals, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to the Reykjavík pool experience.

What to Do Around Reykjavík’s Pools

While enjoying the pools, you may find nearby parks, walking paths, and other amenities. Laugardalslaug, for example, is located in the Laugardalur Valley, where you’ll find botanical gardens, a petting zoo, and various sports facilities. Sundhöllin’s central location means you’re only a short walk away from the shopping streets and cafes of downtown Reykjavík.

Reykjavik Pools in Winter: Can You See the Northern Lights?

Swimming pools in Reykjavík are open year-round, even in winter, and soaking in a hot tub as snow falls around you is an incredible experience. Although many pools operate until late evening, usually until 10pm on weekdays, it’s usually difficult to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights as the pools are located within the city. The light pollution within the city area will dampen the lights if they are visible so your best bet is always to drive a bit out of the city to less lit areas.
