Private Thorsmork Super Jeep Tour

Taking a private tour in a Super Jeep to Thorsmork is the best way to experience Iceland's highlands with your family and friends. You'll ride with an experienced driver in your very own private vehicle so there's no waiting or transfer times. It’s a personalized way to discover Iceland's hidden gems, and for larger groups it's a luxury which can be just as cost-effective as a group tour.

Your own driver guide and vehicle will pick you up at your chosen time before we leave the city of Reykjavik and descend Heillisheiði plateau. After passing the city of Hveragerði we take you along the south coast of Iceland, one of the country's most scenic region. Along the way we stop at the famous Seljalandsfoss waterfall where you can walk behind the waterfall itself and through to the other side. This is the point where we turn away from the coast and drive inland towards our destination.

On this tour the real attraction is the journey there. We'll cross what seems to be countless rivers on the way to Þórsmörk where hopefully we won't come across the common sight of people attempting to cross a river in a car that's too small and have gotten stuck. You'll see that it's a good thing you're in a Super Jeep with an experienced driver.

Once we reach your destination you can go for a hike in Þórsmörk and get up close with a glacier at Gígjökull (depending on the season and time of year). A particularly beautiful hike is the one in Stakkholtsgjá canyon within Þórsmörk.

On the way back you see Seljalandsfoss once again before reaching Reykjavik where your driver drops you off at your chosen location.

The day starts as your driver picks you up within Reykjavík and we head to one of the most famous highlightson the south coast, Seljalandsfoss, a unique and iconic waterfall fed by meltwater from the Eyjafjallajökull glacier. The waterfall dropps 60 meters (197 feet) over a former sea cliff that now offers a rare opportunity: you can walk behind the falling cascade into a natural alcove carved out over thousands of years.

Geologically, the cliff face is composed of ancient palagonite tuff, a type of volcanic rock formed by underwater eruptions during the Ice Age. The constant erosion from glacial meltwater has slowly hollowed out the space behind the waterfall, making it one of the few falls in the world that you can fully encircle on foot.

Further inland, nestled between three major glaciers — Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull, and Tindfjallajökull — lies Þórsmörk, one of Iceland’s most beloved and secluded nature reserves. Named after Þór (Thor), the Norse god of thunder, this mountain valley is only accessible by specially equipped 4x4 vehicles due to its braided glacial rivers and rough volcanic terrain.

Þórsmörk sits in a rift between powerful natural forces. The valley was shaped by repeated glacial floods (jökulhlaups), especially following volcanic eruptions under the glaciers. These sudden outbursts of meltwater have carved deep gorges, deposited vast gravel plains, and created one of Iceland’s most fertile microclimates. Sheltered by surrounding mountains, the area supports surprisingly dense vegetation, including dwarf birch forests, mosses, and arctic flowers — making it a green oasis within the otherwise barren highlands.

Hiking trails crisscross the valley for gorgeous views of deep canyons, lava ridges, and panoramic vistas of the glaciers above. Þórsmörk is also the end point of the famed Laugavegur Trail, which begins in Landmannalaugar and ends in Þórsmörk

After taking in the views and exploring the area we head back to Reykjavik with one last chance to visit Seljalandsfoss. Your driver drops you off at your chosen location in the city.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our Private Tours are popular with a diverse crowd of travelers. Families, especially those with younger children who may need more time and attention, benefit from traveling on their own schedule and with a dedicated driver, while cruise ship and layover passengers enjoy fully using their limited time on land without having to compromise and adjust to scheduled tours.

Travelers who are looking to avoid the crowds at all cost and travel in more luxury and style also greatly enjoy our private tours and the flexibility and control it comes with. If you feel like extending your time a bit at one location or skipping another, all you need to do is talk to your driver.

The beauty of our private tours is that hotel pickup and drop-off services within Reykjavík capital area are included with all private tours. Please note that groups of six people or more may be affected by Icelandic law which prohibits using larger vehicles within some streets in Reykjavik’s downtown area. In that case you may have to be picked up at your accommodation’s nearest bus stop. Most downtown hotels are within a 5 minute walking distance from bus stops.

When booking your tour our convenient system will provide you with the closest pick-up location if direct pickup is not possible at your accommodation for the vehicle required for your group size.

If you have any specific questions or need further details, reach out and we're happy to assist.

All private tours and transfers include an experienced English-speaking driver. If you wish to have a certified local guide lead the tour for the day, you can submit a request by contacting us.

In this case, your expert driver-guide takes the wheel and provides detailed insights, stories, and context throughout the journey — both while driving and at each stop. You’ll have a dedicated private guide ready to show you the hidden perspectives, cultural depth, and local knowledge that most travelers never get to experience.

Your Private Tour does not include food and beverages. For longer tours your driver can recommend where to stop and buy food, whether you're looking to sit down for lunch or quickly grab a bite before hitting the road again. For super jeep tours that venture into the highlands taking snacks for the road too is a good idea.

As this is a private excursion the schedule is yours to control within the duration of the tour. You can always consult your driver for advice.

Iceland's weather can change quickly, so layering your clothing is a must. We suggest dressing in warm, waterproof layers, including a waterproof jacket, sturdy footwear, and a hat and gloves to keep you comfortable in any conditions. Taking an extra pair of warm socks with you is also never a bad idea.
Make sure to bring a warm jacket in winter, especially for northern light tours as it can get cold standing outside on crisp winter nights.

Be aware that inland Iceland is usually colder than the Reykjavík area.
