Super Jeep Northern Lights Tour in Iceland
Join us for a private northern lights adventure, perfect for families or small groups who want to explore the Icelandic night in comfort, away from the crowds. With your own 4x4 Super Jeep and a dedicated driver-guide, you'll have the freedom of the open road with the safety and insight of a local expert.
Your guide picks you up in Reykjavík, and we leave the city lights behind. The destination? That’s decided the night of your tour. Using the latest weather updates and aurora forecasts, your driver chooses the spot with the best chance of clear skies and northern lights — often in Þingvellir National Park or out along the wild Reykjanes Peninsula.
Once we arrive, the Super Jeep gets us off the beaten path to remote locations where the stars shine brightest. There, under the vast winter sky, you’ll watch the auroras dance overhead. After a night of stargazing in the silent night, we return to the city, dropping you off wherever you like.
The Auroras in Iceland
The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are among the most captivating natural phenomena visible in the Arctic regions, particularly during the dark, clear nights of Iceland's winter. This light show occurs when high-energy particles from the solar wind collide with atoms and molecules in Earth's magnetosphere.
Unlike sunlight, which travels in a straight line from the sun, these charged particles are guided by Earth's magnetic field lines toward the polar regions. The collisions primarily take place between 80 and 500 kilometers above the Earth’s surface, exciting the atoms in the upper atmosphere. As the atoms return to their normal state, they release energy in the form of visible light—what we see as the aurora.
While color is one of the most striking features of the aurora, the shape and movement are equally fascinating. Auroras can appear as arcs, spirals, curtains, or rays, often changing rapidly. These patterns are shaped by the dynamics of the magnetosphere and fluctuating solar winds, sometimes even influenced by magnetic substorms caused by disturbances in Earth’s magnetic tail.
Another lesser-known aspect is that auroras can emit sound. Under rare and specific conditions, faint crackling or popping noises have been reported, possibly due to electromagnetic disturbances occurring just above ground level — though this is still debated among scientists.
Viewing conditions depend heavily on geomagnetic activity and atmospheric clarity. The strength of the aurora is measured on a KP-index scale from 0 to 9. In Iceland, a KP level of 2-3 or higher usually brings visible auroras to lowland areas, assuming cloud-free skies. This is when we hit the road!
