Private Golden Circle Winter Wonder

With a private driver you can travel the wintry Golden Circle route in style and on a flexible schedule. You'll see waterfalls frozen over and lava rocks draped with a snowy white blanket. If you've seen the sights in summer the contrast in winter is completely worth a second trip as the attractions get a magical make over.

Since the days are shorter in winter we can start as late as 4 pm which also increases the chances of a Northern Light sighting as the tour lasts to the late evening. Although the days are short in the winter months, we'll take you to the sites in time to see and enjoy them in the twilight before going on to hunt for the auroras.

Customize Your Private Golden Circle Tour

As this winter excursion is a private tour the itinerary is flexible and we're happy to customize it with you. We get plenty of requests to add a visit to Kerið, Faxi Waterfall or even stop at Friðheimar Tomato Farm or at Efstidalur Farm for ice cream. Simply contact us and we'll design the perfect tour for you. We'll send you the full details for approval as additional charges may apply.

If you wish for more information during your tour we recommend you book the tour with a guide. Your expert guide will drive and show you Iceland's Golden Circle while sharing stories and informative details while on the road and during your stops. This option allows your group to be up to fourteen passengers

Tour Highlights

After leaving the city of Reykjavik we head on to the Golden Circle tour.

Þingvellir National Park

At this UNESCO world heritage site the North American and European tectonic plates drift apart and you can walk between them. Þingvellir is also a historically significant place for Iceland as it's the birthplace of the country's first parliament and Christianity.

Geysir Geothermal Area

This area of hot springs in the valley Haukdalur is the reasons geysers have their name. The famous Great Geysir is mostly dormant today but Strokkur erupts every few minutes with hot water gushing 20 meters in the air.

Gullfoss Waterfall

Only 10 minutes from Geysir we find Iceland's most famous waterfall Gullfoss. The golden waterfall is said to get its name from the golden hues and rainbows visible on sunny days.

Although the route usually includes the three main Golden Circle attractions, unless you've requested otherwise, we may alter the route to end where the chances of Northern Lights are best. That's why your driver might change the order of which you visit the attractions.

Aerial view of the Blue Lagoon in Iceland during winter, surrounded by snowy lava fields, with geothermal pools and spa facilities nestled in a serene, icy landscape.

Our day begins in a place where Iceland’s natural forces and national roots intersect — Þingvellir. Here, the ground is slowly pulled apart by two massive tectonic plates: the North American and Eurasian. This ongoing separation has shaped the surrounding terrain into a dramatic rift zone, marked by visible faults and rocky fissures stretching across the landscape. The region is geologically active, with subtle shifts still sculpting it today.

Þingvellir is also deeply tied to the story of Iceland as a nation. In the year 930, it became the meeting point for the Althingi, one of the world’s oldest parliamentary institutions. Historic decisions were made here, including the island’s conversion to Christianity in the year 1000 and its official break from Danish rule in 1944. The ancient meeting site, including the Lögberg (law rock), still stands as a symbol of this legacy.

Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Þingvellir also draws visitors for its natural beauty. It borders Iceland’s largest lake, Þingvallavatn, and during winter, it’s a popular spot for watching the aurora borealis dance across the sky.

Destination Highlights

  • A walk between two tectonic plates
  • Almannagjá Canyon
  • Lögberg Law Rock
  • Öxárfoss Waterfall
  • Silfra fissure where two tectonic plates meet
  • The historical Drowning Pool
  • The coin-sparkling Peningagjá

Heading east through the rift valley, we reach Haukadalur — home to one of Iceland’s most active geothermal zones. This is one of the rare places where you can witness geothermal power right at the surface. Strokkur, the area's star attraction, blasts columns of hot water skyward every few minutes for visitors to see. Nearby lies the Great Geysir — now mostly dormant apart from the occasional eruption every few years. It's the first recorded geyser and where the word 'geyser' originates from.

You can enjoy a walk along marked routes and view geysers, mud pools and hot springs and catch an aerial view of the grounds by following the hillside path.

Always, stay on the marked path for your safety and watch your step.

Destination Highlights

  • Strokkur erupting
  • Geysir the oldest documented geyser
  • Steaming hot springs
  • Colorful bubbling mud pools

We arrive at Gullfoss, where the Hvítá river — fed by the Langjökull glacier — drops in two dramatic stages into a narrow canyon. The water falls a total of 32 meters, crashing into the gorge below. It’s one of Iceland’s most visited natural landmarks, known for both its force and its beauty.

In the early 20th century, there were plans to harness the falls for hydroelectric power. The idea was met with fierce resistance, and one local woman famously vowed to throw herself into the canyon if construction began. The project was eventually dropped, leaving Gullfoss untouched and a monument dedicated to the defender of the falls.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our Private Tours are popular with a diverse crowd of travelers. Families, especially those with younger children who may need more time and attention, benefit from traveling on their own schedule and with a dedicated driver, while cruise ship and layover passengers enjoy fully using their limited time on land without having to compromise and adjust to scheduled tours.

Travelers who are looking to avoid the crowds at all cost and travel in more luxury and style also greatly enjoy our private tours and the flexibility and control it comes with. If you feel like extending your time a bit at one location or skipping another, all you need to do is talk to your driver.

The beauty of our private tours is that hotel pickup and drop-off services within Reykjavík capital area are included with all private tours. Please note that groups of six people or more may be affected by Icelandic law which prohibits using larger vehicles within some streets in Reykjavik’s downtown area. In that case you may have to be picked up at your accommodation’s nearest bus stop. Most downtown hotels are within a 5 minute walking distance from bus stops.

When booking your tour our convenient system will provide you with the closest pick-up location if direct pickup is not possible at your accommodation for the vehicle required for your group size.

If you have any specific questions or need further details, reach out and we're happy to assist.

Your Private Tour does not include food and beverages. For longer tours your driver can recommend where to stop and buy food, whether you're looking to sit down for lunch or quickly grab a bite before hitting the road again. For super jeep tours that venture into the highlands taking snacks for the road too is a good idea.

As this is a private excursion the schedule is yours to control within the duration of the tour. You can always consult your driver for advice.

Iceland's weather can change quickly, so layering your clothing is a must. We suggest dressing in warm, waterproof layers, including a waterproof jacket, sturdy footwear, and a hat and gloves to keep you comfortable in any conditions. Taking an extra pair of warm socks with you is also never a bad idea.
Make sure to bring a warm jacket in winter, especially for northern light tours as it can get cold standing outside on crisp winter nights.

Be aware that inland Iceland is usually colder than the Reykjavík area.

As the northern lights are a natural phenomenon a sighting cannot be guaranteed. Please be aware that we may have to cancel the tour if chances to see the lights are too low as we only operate when forecasts are promising. If we cancel you get a full refund.

A refund is not possible if the tour is operated and no lights were seen. However, in scheduled tours such as the Evening Aurora Hunt it's possible to join again in case you do not see the lights.

All private tours and transfers include an experienced English-speaking driver. If you wish to have a certified local guide lead the tour for the day, you can submit a request by contacting us.

In this case, your expert driver-guide takes the wheel and provides detailed insights, stories, and context throughout the journey — both while driving and at each stop. You’ll have a dedicated private guide ready to show you the hidden perspectives, cultural depth, and local knowledge that most travelers never get to experience.
