Private City Tour

Exploring Reykjavík on a private tour gives you a relaxed experience that's perfect for families or friends traveling together. With your own vehicle and driver, you set the pace from the start so there's no waiting or transfer times. It’s a personalized way to discover the city’s highlights, and for larger groups, it can be just as cost-effective as a group tour.

Your driver will pick you up at your chosen pickup location and hour. Next, we take off and explore the historical and architectural side of the city of Reykjavik. This includes visiting the 360 degree observation deck Perlan, the fairy tale like Hallgrimskirkja Church in the old town of Reykjavik, and Harpa concert hall, Höfði House, and the Sun Voyager sculpture along the Reykjavik harbor. The tour takes about 3 hours, and leaves you the rest of the day and evening to explore Reykjavik on your own. Be sure to visit one of the numerous museums of your choice, and check out the popular downtown design stores. You can also combine the tour with a Whale Watching tour.

Of course since this is a private tour you can also add a stop to have a cup of coffee or simply stay longer at some of our attractions.

We start the day with a visit to Reykjavík’s most iconic landmark, Hallgrímskirkja. This striking Lutheran church, designed by state architect Guðjón Samúelsson, took nearly four decades to complete (from 1944 to 1982). Its tower was inspired by Iceland’s basalt columns and erupting geysers and inside the church you'll find a massive 5,275-pipe organ that hosts regular concerts.

Outside stands a statue of Leifur Eiríksson, the Norse explorer said to have reached North America around the year 1000. The sculpture was a gift from the United States, commemorating the shared Viking legacy.

Our second stop is Harpa, Reykjavík’s striking concert and conference center located by the harbor. It serves as the home of the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra and the Icelandic Opera, and hosts cultural events and festivals year-round.

Designed by Ólafur Elíasson, the building's glass façade reflects Icelandic nature, with design elements evoking the Northern Lights and volcanic forms. Each window contains four layers of glass and integrated lighting, allowing the entire structure to display dynamic patterns and colors after dark, making it both a performance venue and a work of art.

Our next stop is the Sun Voyager, a striking steel sculpture along Reykjavík’s northern waterfront. While its shape hints at a Viking ship, artist Jón Gunnar Árnason intended it as a dream vessel — an ode to the sun and a symbol of exploration, freedom, and possibility.

With views of Mount Esja across the bay, it’s one of the city’s most photographed landmarks and a perfect stop to take in the sea air and surrounding scenery.

The Sólfarið Sun Voyager sculpture in Reykjavik, Iceland, set against a backdrop of blue skies and distant mountains.

We head to Höfði House, one of the city’s most historically significant buildings. Built in 1909, this elegant structure is best known as the site of the 1986 Reykjavík Summit between U.S. President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev — a key moment in the final years of the Cold War.

Originally built for the French consul, Höfði has hosted notable figures over the years and is said to be haunted by a resident ghost, according to local lore. Overlooking the bay, the house blends quiet charm with powerful political legacy.

Our final stop of the day is Perlan's 360° observation deck, one of Reykjavík’s most unique structures. Built atop six old hot water tanks, the building is crowned with a glass dome that resembles a futuristic spacecraft. From its observation deck, you’ll get gorgeous views of the entire city, surrounding mountains, and Faxaflói Bay.

Inside, we recommend you grab an ice cream, one of the best in town, to go with the Reykjavík city views.

Perlan is also the host of the Wonders of Iceland exhibition that showcases Iceland’s natural phenomena, including glaciers, volcanoes, and geothermal energy — a perfect add-on that we are happy to organize for you. There’s also a rotating restaurant and café under the dome, offering a unique dining experience with ever-changing views.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our Private Tours are popular with a diverse crowd of travelers. Families, especially those with younger children who may need more time and attention, benefit from traveling on their own schedule and with a dedicated driver, while cruise ship and layover passengers enjoy fully using their limited time on land without having to compromise and adjust to scheduled tours.

Travelers who are looking to avoid the crowds at all cost and travel in more luxury and style also greatly enjoy our private tours and the flexibility and control it comes with. If you feel like extending your time a bit at one location or skipping another, all you need to do is talk to your driver.

The beauty of our private tours is that hotel pickup and drop-off services within Reykjavík capital area are included with all private tours. Please note that groups of six people or more may be affected by Icelandic law which prohibits using larger vehicles within some streets in Reykjavik’s downtown area. In that case you may have to be picked up at your accommodation’s nearest bus stop. Most downtown hotels are within a 5 minute walking distance from bus stops.

When booking your tour our convenient system will provide you with the closest pick-up location if direct pickup is not possible at your accommodation for the vehicle required for your group size.

If you have any specific questions or need further details, reach out and we're happy to assist.

All private tours and transfers include an experienced English-speaking driver. If you wish to have a certified local guide lead the tour for the day, you can submit a request by contacting us.

In this case, your expert driver-guide takes the wheel and provides detailed insights, stories, and context throughout the journey — both while driving and at each stop. You’ll have a dedicated private guide ready to show you the hidden perspectives, cultural depth, and local knowledge that most travelers never get to experience.

Your Private Tour does not include food and beverages. For longer tours your driver can recommend where to stop and buy food, whether you're looking to sit down for lunch or quickly grab a bite before hitting the road again. For super jeep tours that venture into the highlands taking snacks for the road too is a good idea.

As this is a private excursion the schedule is yours to control within the duration of the tour. You can always consult your driver for advice.

Iceland's weather can change quickly, so layering your clothing is a must. We suggest dressing in warm, waterproof layers, including a waterproof jacket, sturdy footwear, and a hat and gloves to keep you comfortable in any conditions. Taking an extra pair of warm socks with you is also never a bad idea.
Make sure to bring a warm jacket in winter, especially for northern light tours as it can get cold standing outside on crisp winter nights.

Be aware that inland Iceland is usually colder than the Reykjavík area.
