A Private Northern Lights Tour

A private northern light tour is ideal if you are travelling with your family or a group of friends and want to enjoy nature on your own but still have a professional drive you and explain along the way.

The tour starts with your friendly driver-guide picking you up and we immediately head out of the city leaving the bright lights behind. Where your aurora viewing destination might be remains a mystery until that same evening as your driver picks the best possible location depending on the weather and light forecast. Our most frequently visited destination are within Þingvellir National Park and the Reykjanes Peninsula but as we are dealing with a natural phenomenon nothing is set in stone.

After you've spend the night gazing at the stars and northern lights in the clear winter sky your driver heads back to the city and drops you off at your chosen drop-off point.

The Northern Lights - Aurora Borealis

The Northern Lights tour in Iceland takes you to see a spectacular natural phenomenon which happens during the winter months. The Northern Lights, also known as Aurora Borealis, are caused by the interaction of particles from the sun with the upper atmosphere near the North Pole. The most common color is green but on good nights you might experience an entire spectrum with purple, red, blue, and yellow.

What colors you see all depends on a factors including altitude, type of gases and levels of solar activity. For instance, oxygen can produce green and red lights, while nitrogen produces blue and purple lights. Most commonly the green auroras occur at about 100 to 240 km (60-150 miles) above the Earth's surface, the red lights typically between 240 and 320 km (150-200 miles) and the blue auroras, a rarer phenomenon, occur at lower altitudes, usually 100 km (60 miles).

The only thing which can make it more interesting than simply seeing the lights is when they start dancing n the sky, an experience nobody forgets.

  • Food and Drinks - There's few places to stop in the late evenings
  • Hiking boots - Sturdy shoes are better in these landscapes
  • Fully charged Camera - And know the right settings for good photos

Frequently Asked Questions

Your Private Tour does not include food and beverages. For longer tours your driver can recommend where to stop and buy food, whether you're looking to sit down for lunch or quickly grab a bite before hitting the road again. For super jeep tours that venture into the highlands taking snacks for the road too is a good idea.

As this is a private excursion the schedule is yours to control within the duration of the tour. You can always consult your driver for advice.

The beauty of our private tours is that hotel pickup and drop-off services within Reykjavík capital area are included with all private tours. Please note that groups of six people or more may be affected by Icelandic law which prohibits using larger vehicles within some streets in Reykjavik’s downtown area. In that case you may have to be picked up at your accommodation’s nearest bus stop. Most downtown hotels are within a 5 minute walking distance from bus stops.

When booking your tour our convenient system will provide you with the closest pick-up location if direct pickup is not possible at your accommodation for the vehicle required for your group size.

If you have any specific questions or need further details, reach out and we're happy to assist.

All private tours and transfers include an experienced English-speaking driver. If you wish to have a certified local guide lead the tour for the day, you can submit a request by contacting us.

In this case, your expert driver-guide takes the wheel and provides detailed insights, stories, and context throughout the journey — both while driving and at each stop. You’ll have a dedicated private guide ready to show you the hidden perspectives, cultural depth, and local knowledge that most travelers never get to experience.

Our Private Tours are popular with a diverse crowd of travelers. Families, especially those with younger children who may need more time and attention, benefit from traveling on their own schedule and with a dedicated driver, while cruise ship and layover passengers enjoy fully using their limited time on land without having to compromise and adjust to scheduled tours.

Travelers who are looking to avoid the crowds at all cost and travel in more luxury and style also greatly enjoy our private tours and the flexibility and control it comes with. If you feel like extending your time a bit at one location or skipping another, all you need to do is talk to your driver.

As the northern lights are a natural phenomenon a sighting cannot be guaranteed. Please be aware that we may have to cancel the tour if chances to see the lights are too low as we only operate when forecasts are promising. If we cancel you get a full refund.

A refund is not possible if the tour is operated and no lights were seen. However, in scheduled tours such as the Evening Aurora Hunt it's possible to join again in case you do not see the lights.

Dressing warm is the number one rule. More layers don’t always mean more warmth, that’s why we recommend thermal underwear, layered with fleece or down and then a wind- and/or waterproof outer layer like snow pants and a jacket. Don’t forget warm socks and mittens, good shoes, a hat and throw on a scarf just to be safe.

Please keep in mind that Northern Light Tours are operated in late winter evenings when temperature can drop well below 0°C (32°F).
