A Private Golden Circle Tour in Iceland

A private golden circle tour is ideal for families and small groups of friends who simply are looking to have a great time together. Skip the part where you need to wait for a pick up and switch buses and jump right into the adventure with your own English speaking driver and comfort vehicle.

The Golden Circle is the perfect trip for visitors who want to experience the power and beauty of Icelandic nature up close in person. Iceland´s most popular day tour combines some of Iceland´s main attractions into an 8 hour tour which is ideal if you only have on day or little time on your hands.

The tour takes about 8 hours and brings you to some of the most famous Icelandic landmarks in a single day. You will see Gullfoss waterfall, or golden waterfalls at the edge of the highlands where Hvitá glacial river plunges down 32 meters in two steps.  Which is considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland. The world famous Geysir, which gives geysers world wide their name. And the beautiful Thingvellir National Park where the tectonic plates of America and Eurasia meet.

Strokkur Geyser erupting at sunrise in Iceland, showcasing a dramatic water plume against a colorful sky with a snowy winter landscape in the background.

We arrive at our first stop along the Golden Circle route, Þingvellir National Park, a site rich in history and geology. Once in the park you’re standing in a rift valley where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are slowly pulling apart - about 2 cm (1 inch) every year. The ground here has been shaped over a million years, with visible cracks, lava fields, and volcanic craters.

Þingvellir is also where Iceland’s major historical decisions were made. At the law rock, the High Council declared Christianity in the year 1000 and later, Iceland’s independence from Denmark in 1944.

The area is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Destination Highlights

  • A walk between two tectonic plates
  • Almannagjá Canyon
  • Lögberg Law Rock
  • Öxárfoss Waterfall
  • Silfra fissure where two tectonic plates meet
  • The historical Drowning Pool
  • The coin-sparkling Peningagjá
Scenic view of Þingvellir National Park with snow-covered mountains and traditional Icelandic church by the lake in early spring.

We drive east from Þingvellir, crossing from the North American Plate to the Eurasian Plate through the Rift Valley. The road follows the mountains that mark the edge of the highlands.

Soon we arrive at the Geysir geothermal area, one of the few places in Iceland with steaming hot springs and bubbling pools. Here you’ll see Strokkur geyser erupting every 4–5 minutes.

Destination Highlights

  • Strokkur erupting
  • Geysir the oldest documented geyser
  • Steaming hot springs
  • Colorful bubbling mud pools
Powerful eruption of a geyser under a clear blue sky during a Golden Circle tour in Iceland, surrounded by icy terrain and curious onlookers.

We arrive at Gullfoss, one of Iceland’s most visited waterfalls. The Hvítá river, fed by the Langjökull glacier, flows from the highlands and drops 32 meters (105 feet) in two steps into a deep gorge. You’ll hear it before you see it — the roar is powerful.

The name means “Golden Falls.” Some say it comes from a Viking who threw his gold into the water so no one else could have it. Others believe it’s because of the rainbows that appear in the mist on sunny days.

In the early 1900s, there were plans to dam the gorge for a power plant. A local farmer’s daughter fought hard against it — even threatened to jump into the falls if construction began. Thankfully, the plans were dropped and today we get to enjoy Gullfoss just as it is.

Destination Highlights

  • Getting up close to the waterfall
Gullfoss waterfall with a vibrant rainbow arcing over the cascading water, surrounded by lush green landscape and a scenic pathway on Iceland’s Golden Circle.

Here are just a few things to consider taking with you on your day out:

  • Warm layers - Places inland tend to be colder than Reykjavík
  • Rainproof layers - The weather changes fast in Iceland
  • Food and Drinks - We'll make sure to also stop along the way
  • Hiking boots - Sturdy shoes are better in these landscape

The golden circle; tectonic plates, waterfall, geyser, lakes.

We hired a private minibus to take us to the wonderful national park and all the sights within reach of Reykjavik and some extra bread making and tomato-growing lunch spot at Fridheumar

Ziggy, our driver was fun, humorous, chatty, knowledgeable and a delight to spend the day with.
He even managed to stave away the rain at each stop, with it pelting down in between ( I think that was more down to knowing what to go to and when)

Highly recommend !

Stunning Scenery and knowledgeable guide!

We were promptly met by our guide, Vidir Kristjansson, at the cruise terminal. The stunning scenery is non-stop. Vidir was knowledgable and quite eager to share his country with us. Walking through the towering cliffs of Thingvellir National Park was awesome. Having never seen a geyser before, Geysir Hot Springs put on quite a demonstration. And, the blue hue of Little Geysir was captivating. The major attraction of our trip was the magnificent Gullfoss, and it did not disappoint. I can understand why people risk their life to get the perfect picture. Our tour continued to Faxi waterfall and the geothermal overs at Laugavata Fontana. Our visit to the geothermal ovens coincided with a loaf of baked bread being dug up from it's steamy oven.

We had a fabulous day with Vidir. One of our traveling companions was suffering from a nasty cold. Vidir took the time to make sure she was comfortable throughout the day and allowed her to stay in the van when she didn't feel well enough to walk from the parking lots.

We would like to say a huge thank you to our guide Aron for an excellent day seeing geysirs, tectonic plates and waterfalls. He was so knowledgeable and we really learned a lot even with a geology background. He was friendly and accommodating and we really couldn’t have had a better day - would highly recommend.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our Private Tours are popular with a diverse crowd of travelers. Families, especially those with younger children who may need more time and attention, benefit from traveling on their own schedule and with a dedicated driver, while cruise ship and layover passengers enjoy fully using their limited time on land without having to compromise and adjust to scheduled tours.

Travelers who are looking to avoid the crowds at all cost and travel in more luxury and style also greatly enjoy our private tours and the flexibility and control it comes with. If you feel like extending your time a bit at one location or skipping another, all you need to do is talk to your driver.

The beauty of our private tours is that hotel pickup and drop-off services within Reykjavík capital area are included with all private tours. Please note that groups of six people or more may be affected by Icelandic law which prohibits using larger vehicles within some streets in Reykjavik’s downtown area. In that case you may have to be picked up at your accommodation’s nearest bus stop. Most downtown hotels are within a 5 minute walking distance from bus stops.

When booking your tour our convenient system will provide you with the closest pick-up location if direct pickup is not possible at your accommodation for the vehicle required for your group size.

If you have any specific questions or need further details, reach out and we're happy to assist.

All private tours and transfers include an experienced English-speaking driver. If you wish to have a certified local guide lead the tour for the day, you can submit a request by contacting us.

In this case, your expert driver-guide takes the wheel and provides detailed insights, stories, and context throughout the journey — both while driving and at each stop. You’ll have a dedicated private guide ready to show you the hidden perspectives, cultural depth, and local knowledge that most travelers never get to experience.

Your Private Tour does not include food and beverages. For longer tours your driver can recommend where to stop and buy food, whether you're looking to sit down for lunch or quickly grab a bite before hitting the road again. For super jeep tours that venture into the highlands taking snacks for the road too is a good idea.

As this is a private excursion the schedule is yours to control within the duration of the tour. You can always consult your driver for advice.

Iceland's weather can change quickly, so layering your clothing is a must. We suggest dressing in warm, waterproof layers, including a waterproof jacket, sturdy footwear, and a hat and gloves to keep you comfortable in any conditions. Taking an extra pair of warm socks with you is also never a bad idea.
Make sure to bring a warm jacket in winter, especially for northern light tours as it can get cold standing outside on crisp winter nights.

Be aware that inland Iceland is usually colder than the Reykjavík area.
