Northern Lights Tour From Reykjavík

The Northern Lights tour in Iceland offers the chance to witness a spectacular natural phenomenon, visible during the winter months from September to April. Also known as the Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights are caused by the interaction of solar particles with the Earth's upper atmosphere near the North Pole. The tour locations vary daily, depending on weather conditions, making sightings unpredictable. If you don’t see the Northern Lights during your tour, you can join another tour free of charge.

Please note that return times may vary. Since the day tour takes place at night and during the winter, we strongly recommend dressing warmly. While the coaches are heated, the best views are often outside, where you may spend some time searching for or enjoying the lights. Warm footwear and headgear will enhance your experience.

  • This tour is only available in the winter
  • Our experienced guides use modern technology to find the best spots for viewing the Northern Lights
  • Free pickup and drop-off are provided, starting 30 minutes before departure

Itinerary

Start your evening with a convenient hotel pickup, starting 30 minutes before your tour departure time. If direct pickup is not possible at your city center accommodation our convenient booking system will provide you with the closest pick-up location. Usually located at the nearest bus stop no more than five minutes from your hotel.

Once everyone's onboard the bus departs Reykjavík, leaving the city light behind. Your exact aurora viewing location will be decided on the evening of your tour, as your driver selects the best possible spot based on the latest weather and solar activity forecasts. Þingvellir National Park and the Reykjanes Peninsula are among our most common destinations, but with a natural phenomenon like the Northern Lights, flexibility is key.

Pickup starts 30 min before departure.

Beautiful Northern Lights swirling above the cityscape of Reykjavik at night, creating a mesmerizing view.

After a pickup in Reykjavík you board a comfortable coach and head out of the city to a place with as little as no light pollution around.

Where that place is remains a mystery until the day of your tour as it depend on the weather and forecast. Some of the most frequently visited places are the Reykjanes Peninsula and Þingvellir National Park but nothing is set in stone and the final destination depends on the forecast and light activity.

After a night spent under the stars and the shimmering northern lights, your driver will take you back to the city and drop you off at your chosen location.

After a night spent under the stars and the shimmering northern lights, you can enjoy a relaxed drive back to Reykjavík, as your experienced driver navigates icy roads ensuring a safe return.

Once in the city your driver drops you off at your chosen location.

Here are just a few things to consider taking with you on your magical evening out:

  • Warm layers - Places inland tend to be colder than Reykjavík especially at night
  • Windproof layers - Nothing worse than being cold while hunting for the lights
  • Food and Drinks - There are few places to stop in the late evening
  • Hiking boots - Sturdy shoes are better in these landscapes and in winter it's safer to bring crampons
  • Fully charged Camera - And know the right camera settings to capture the lights

Comfortable, knowledgable, friendly

Utilised this company for trips to; Golden Circle, Blue Lagoon & Northern Lights hunt (yes, we saw them!) can’t recommend them highly enough, they do a great job. The drivers are confident on the ice roads as you’d expect and kept everyone safe at all times. The guides were very knowledgeable and spoke perfect English.

Fantastic Experience

Our driver Pall and guide Petur were absolutely fantastic. We learned a lot about the places we visited, and life in Iceland in general, with some great bits of humour along the way.
We had some last minute changes to our trip due to the strikes in Reykjavik but were always kept informed on what was happening.
When we return to Iceland again we will be booking with Snaeland Travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

We monitor all aurora activity with the best possible equipment and only operate this tour when there’s a good chance of success. If we are certain that there’s no chance to see the Northern Lights we will cancel the tour. You’ll receive an email with easy instructions to rebook or receive a refund if you’re not able to join us on another day.

The Northern Lights are difficult to predict with certainty but given the right conditions you can be sure that we’ll head out and the tour goes ahead as planned. For those interested you can follow the Aurora Forecast at the Icelandic Meteorological Office website.

While these tours only operate when forecasts are promising, if no aurora is seen, your ticket is valid for two years, allowing you to rebook for another date. Simply contact us and we’ll help you book a retry.

Please keep in mind that refunds are not issued when a tour takes place but no Northern Lights are seen.

Dressing warm is the number one rule. More layers don’t always mean more warmth, that’s why we recommend thermal underwear, layered with fleece or down and then a wind- and/or waterproof outer layer like snow pants and a jacket. Don’t forget warm socks and mittens, good shoes, a hat and throw on a scarf just to be safe.

Please keep in mind that Northern Light Tours are operated in late winter evenings when temperature can drop well below 0°C (32°F).

Due to traffic restrictions in the city center, your pickup location may not be directly in front of your hotel or accommodation but rather the closest bus stop.

It’s important that you provide the complete address of your accommodation when booking your tour and our convenient system will provide you with the closest pick-up location if direct pickup is not possible at your accommodation.

A good example is Hótel Óðinsvé where you’ll be guided to Bus Stop 8 at Hallgrímskirkja. To make it easy to find we’ve put together locations of all city center bus stops.

All our vehicles are easily recognizable, displaying the distinctive Snæland Travel logo and a sign in the window with the tour name.

First things first, have your correct email and phone number listed with us upon booking your tour so we can contact you if we run into any trouble finding you.

Pickup usually starts 30 minutes before the tour departure time. The exact information is provided in your booking. Please be ready at your pickup stop from the start of the pickup time indicated to avoid any delays, as you might be the first pickup of the day.

In the case of any unforeseen events you can always give us a call +(354) 588 8660 (or the contact number provided in your email).

Yes, there is a trained and certified English speaking guide on each one of our tours, ready to make your day.

The only exceptions are Blue Lagoon and Sky Lagoon transfer tours, our Self-Drive tours, and Private tours unless a private guide has been requested at an additional charge.
