Private Golden Circle & Super Jeep Tour

A private tour is ideal for families or groups of friends who simply are looking to have a great time together. Skip the part where you need to wait for a pick up and switch busses and jump right into the adventure with your own driver guide and vehicle. A luxury which if you are a bigger group is not even more expensive than joining a scheduled tour.

With a Super Jeep the ride itself becomes an adventure. These modified vehicles are destined to take you where no one else can go.

The tour takes about 10 hours and brings you to some of the most famous Icelandic landmarks in a single day. You will see the Gullfoss waterfalls, or golden waterfalls at the edge of the highlands where Hvitá river plunges down 32 meters in two steps. The world famous Geysir, which gave geysers world wide their name. And the beautiful Thingvellir National Park where you can walk between the continental plates.

From Gullfoss you drive further until you reach Langjökull glacier which is the real highlight of this tour because you will drive up the glacier with your Super Jeep. The driver lets some air out of the tires so they have a bigger surface and you crawl up the glacier. So bring good shoes, a camera and the urge for adventure.

The vibrant red volcanic rock surrounding Kerid Crater Lake, Iceland.

We begin our journey at Þingvellir, where Iceland’s history and geology come together. This is where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates pull apart, slowly shaping a rift valley that’s been forming for over a million years. You can clearly see the cracks and fissures where the land is splitting open.

Þingvellir is also where Iceland’s first parliament, Althingi, was established in 930 AD. Major decisions in the country’s history were made here — like the adoption of Christianity in the year 1000 and the declaration of independence from Denmark in 1944.

The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and in winter it’s also a favorite spot for viewing the northern lights.

Destination Highlights

  • A walk between two tectonic plates
  • Almannagjá Canyon
  • Lögberg Law Rock
  • Öxárfoss Waterfall
  • Silfra fissure where two tectonic plates meet
  • The historical Drowning Pool
  • The coin-sparkling Peningagjá

We drive east through the rift valley and into Haukadalur, where the Geysir geothermal area waits. This is where the earth steams, pools bubble and the smell of sulfur lingers in the air.

This is one of the few places in Iceland where geothermal activity is right on the surface. Strokkur, the active geyser, erupts every few minutes — shooting boiling water up into the sky. Just beside it is the original Geysir, now mostly dormant, but still the namesake of all geysers around the world.

The ground here feels alive. It shifts, steams, and reminds you that Iceland is still forming.

Destination Highlights

  • Strokkur erupting
  • Geysir the oldest documented geyser
  • Steaming hot springs
  • Colorful bubbling mud pools
A stunning eruption of the famous Geysir on the Golden Circle tour in Iceland.

Next, we arrive at Gullfoss — “the golden falls.” The Hvítá river flows from Langjökull glacier and drops 32 meters (105 feet) in two stages into a narrow gorge. You can walk along the river to a viewpoint right next to the falls. An activity we recommend to feel the full power of the falls.

On sunny days, you'll see rainbows form in the spray. Some say that’s where the name comes from. Others believe it’s from an old Viking legend — where a man threw his gold into the falls so no one else could have it.

Destination Highlights

  • Getting up close to the waterfall
Scenic view of Gullfoss Waterfall during a vibrant sunset, with tourists walking along the green path as part of the Golden Circle tour in Iceland.

After Gullfoss, we head into the highlands toward Langjökull—the second-largest glacier in Iceland. As we gain elevation, the green landscape fades into volcanic rock and barren hills, shaped by melting ice and ancient floods.

This is a wild, post-glacial zone. The ground is rough and scarred, marked by old eruptions and jagged ridges that feel almost otherworldly. The glacier itself stretches across the horizon, a massive flow of ice only reachable by snowmobiles or special vehicles.

The highlight of the tour is reaching the glacier and driving on top of it. You'll be far from busy sights and sounds and can enjoy the quiet atmosphere.

Destination Highlights

  • Drive on top of a Glacier
  • Experience driving in a 4x4 Super Jeep
  • Discover rugged terrain in Iceland's highlands
  • Go where few others venture and enjoy the tranquility

Here are just a few things to consider taking with you on your day out:

  • Warm layers - Places inland tend to be colder than Reykjavík
  • Rainproof layers - The weather changes fast in Iceland
  • Food and Drinks - We'll make sure to also stop along the way
  • Hiking boots - Sturdy shoes are better in these landscape
  • Fully charged Camera

Frequently Asked Questions

Our Private Tours are popular with a diverse crowd of travelers. Families, especially those with younger children who may need more time and attention, benefit from traveling on their own schedule and with a dedicated driver, while cruise ship and layover passengers enjoy fully using their limited time on land without having to compromise and adjust to scheduled tours.

Travelers who are looking to avoid the crowds at all cost and travel in more luxury and style also greatly enjoy our private tours and the flexibility and control it comes with. If you feel like extending your time a bit at one location or skipping another, all you need to do is talk to your driver.

The beauty of our private tours is that hotel pickup and drop-off services within Reykjavík capital area are included with all private tours. Please note that groups of six people or more may be affected by Icelandic law which prohibits using larger vehicles within some streets in Reykjavik’s downtown area. In that case you may have to be picked up at your accommodation’s nearest bus stop. Most downtown hotels are within a 5 minute walking distance from bus stops.

When booking your tour our convenient system will provide you with the closest pick-up location if direct pickup is not possible at your accommodation for the vehicle required for your group size.

If you have any specific questions or need further details, reach out and we're happy to assist.

All private tours and transfers include an experienced English-speaking driver. If you wish to have a certified local guide lead the tour for the day, you can submit a request by contacting us.

In this case, your expert driver-guide takes the wheel and provides detailed insights, stories, and context throughout the journey — both while driving and at each stop. You’ll have a dedicated private guide ready to show you the hidden perspectives, cultural depth, and local knowledge that most travelers never get to experience.

Your Private Tour does not include food and beverages. For longer tours your driver can recommend where to stop and buy food, whether you're looking to sit down for lunch or quickly grab a bite before hitting the road again. For super jeep tours that venture into the highlands taking snacks for the road too is a good idea.

As this is a private excursion the schedule is yours to control within the duration of the tour. You can always consult your driver for advice.

Iceland's weather can change quickly, so layering your clothing is a must. We suggest dressing in warm, waterproof layers, including a waterproof jacket, sturdy footwear, and a hat and gloves to keep you comfortable in any conditions. Taking an extra pair of warm socks with you is also never a bad idea.
Make sure to bring a warm jacket in winter, especially for northern light tours as it can get cold standing outside on crisp winter nights.

Be aware that inland Iceland is usually colder than the Reykjavík area.
