Iceland's Classic Golden Circle Day Tour from Reykjavík

The Golden Circle is one of Iceland’s most popular and iconic sightseeing routes for a day tour, offering a rich mix of natural beauty, geological wonders, and historical significance. This scenic loop covers approximately 300 kilometers (186 miles) and includes three of Iceland’s most famous attractions: Þingvellir National Park, Geysir Geothermal Area, and Gullfoss Waterfall.

Þingvellir National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site where the tectonic plates of North America and Eurasia slowly drift apart, creating rift valleys and fissures. It's also the birthplace of the Icelandic parliament, Alþingi, which was established in 930 AD, making it one of the oldest parliamentary institutions in the world.

The Geysir Geothermal Area is home to the famous Strokkur geyser, which erupts every few minutes, sending a high column of boiling water into the air. The area is a fascinating showcase of Iceland’s geothermal activity with bubbling hot springs, steaming vents, and colorful mineral deposits.

Gullfoss, or the "Golden Waterfall," is one of Iceland’s most beautiful waterfalls. The powerful Hvítá River plunges into a deep canyon and creates a powerful two tier cascade that often casts rainbows in the mist.

The Golden Circle is easily accessible from Reykjavik and offers a perfect introduction to Iceland’s unique landscapes and cultural heritage. It’s a must-do experience for anyone visiting the country.

Your first stop is Friðheimar, a geothermal greenhouse farm where tomatoes are grown year-round using Iceland’s natural heat and clean energy. Here, you’ll learn how sustainable farming thrives in the Arctic, from eco-friendly growing methods to natural pest control using biological systems. For those interested, there’s also the option to taste freshly made tomato-based specialties.

Our second stop of the day is at the Geysir Geothermal Area, one of Iceland’s most active and visually striking geothermal zones filled with volcanic energy. The area is named after Geysir, the geyser that gave all others their name, though it is now largely dormant. With a last known eruption in 2016. However, its smaller but far more active neighbor, Strokkur, erupts every 5–10 minutes, sending a jet of boiling water up to 30 meters (100 feet) into the air. The landscape around the geysers is filled with bubbling mud pools, steaming fumaroles, and mineral-rich hot springs, with colors ranging from deep blues to rust reds due to the sulfur and mineral rich soil all around.

On your visit you'll get a close-up view of Iceland’s geothermal power and see in action how heat from the Earth’s core shapes the land and fuels the country’s renewable energy systems.

Next up is Gullfoss, or the "Golden Waterfall," one of Iceland’s most beautiful and powerful waterfalls. The Hvítá River, fed by Langjökull Glacier, rushes southward before plunging into a deep canyon, creating a double-tiered falls that drops a total of 32 meters (105 feet). On sunny days the scene becomes even more spectacular when the mist from the waterfall often creates rainbows.

In winter the waterfalls takes on a completely different appearance when parts of the falls freeze and form massive icicles and snow covered the cliffs and the landscape around.

The area surrounding Gullfoss is also rich in history and the memory of the 'Woman who loved the falls' is honored with a statue close to the fall.s.

When you visit today, you can view the falls from several platforms that help you safely get up close to feel the roaring force.

The last stop of the day is at Þingvellir National Park. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its unique geological and historical significance. Here, the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates slowly drift apart, forming rift valleys, deep fissures, and crystal-clear water-filled crevices like Silfra, a world-famous diving and snorkeling site with some of the clearest water on Earth. Also the only place in the world where you can touch two continents at the same time. The park is also the birthplace of the Icelandic parliament, Alþingi, which was founded in 930 AD, making it one of the oldest parliamentary institutions in the world. For centuries, Icelanders gathered here to pass laws and settle disputes, shaping the nation’s legal and political history. Inside the park is also the drowning pool, the money fissure among many other iconic sights.

Your guide will lead you through the park and make stops at significant sights and historically relevant places to share stories as well as local and historical knowledge.

The weather in Iceland is unpredictable making it important to pack smart so you can enjoy your day no matter the weather.

Here are just a few things to consider taking with you on your day out:

  • Warm layers - Places inland tend to be colder than Reykjavík
  • Rainproof layers - The weather changes fast in Iceland
  • Food and Drinks - Your guide also makes sure to stop along the way where food can be purchased
  • Fully charged phone and camera
  • Hiking boots - Sturdy shoes are better in these landscapes
  • For winter we recommend thermal layers, a pair of warm socks and crampons as paths can be icy.

Best tour company i have ever dealt with! 1000% recommend them

I booked a group trip for 12 people which Dagbjort looked after. The weather meant not one but 2 flights got cancelled and Dagbjort managed to move every single one of our tours around with one days notice, was on hand constantly going back and forth with a million questions from me and coming up with new ideas for the trip and to top it off then chucked in a 3 course meal on the house at an amazing restaurant. I got outstanding reviews from the people who went on the trip.

The tour guides were amazing, the transfers were prompt and easy to find & everything went seamlessly. I couldn't recommend this company anymore. And they are very reasonably priced too, at first i questioned why they were so much cheaper than other tour companies and it is because they have their own fleet which is also why when the weather meant things got messed up it was all so easy to sort out and i only had to contact one person. Amazing tour company and amazing staff!!! The greenhouse on the golden circle is amazing and so is the lava tour!

Golden Circle tour

I am kalavathi, a lead traveller for a group of 14 friends who booked this tour. Unfortunately corona pandemic stopped our visit. We also booked airport pick up and drop. Right from day 1 until cancellation, the response to our queries was so promt and quick, I as the lead traveller was very much impressed. It really created a very good impression on me. My trip to Iceland in future will definitely go through snaeland travels only.
