5 Ways To Go From KEF to Reykjavík
So, you’ve just landed at Keflavík International Airport — Iceland’s main gateway — and you’re ready to start your adventure! But first, you need to figure out how to make the 50-kilometer (31 miles) journey from Keflavík Airport (KEF) to downtown Reykjavík. This route is one of the most traveled in Iceland, and thankfully, there are several great options to suit different budgets and preferences.
Here’s your ultimate guide on how to go from Keflavík Airport to Reykjavík when arriving in Iceland, including buses, taxis, car rentals, and private transfers.
Quick Tips - KEF to Reykjavík
1. Private Transfer (door to door) is cheaper than a Taxi
When you pre-book a private transfer you pay for complete convenience - you know how much you pay, your driver monitors your flight status, greets you at the airport, and drops you off right outside your hotel. You can Book your Private Airport Shuttle here. I personally cannot recommend booking a taxi last minute once you land since the final price will depend on the distance to your accommodation as well as the weekday, time of day, and other fees - an all in all unpredictable expense that might cost you +250 USD.

2. Check added cost to get from drop-off location to your hotel
Flybus and Airport Direct and other airport shuttle services have specific drop-off locations within Reykjavík capital area. Before booking your transport have a look at how to get from drop-off location to your accommodation (there's nothing worse than lugging your bags a long way or being presented with a taxi bill worth a day's budget). You'll find all drop-off spots below.
3. You can add a stop at the Blue Lagoon on your way into town
After a long flight it's a great idea to soak in the healing water of the Blue Lagoon. You can book a Private Airport Shuttle with a stop at the Blue Lagoon here. Just make sure to book your Blue Lagoon time slot well in advance. It's the perfect way to visit the spa as your driver will wait and you won't need to move your luggage from the car.

It's the most convenient option you can possibly book.

Recommended Local Provider
Airport Shuttle Iceland by Snæland Travel is a recommended provider for a few major reasons. When booking with the company you'll get easy direct access to the in-house customer service team for personal experience, instead of a third-party call center. Your driver will also monitor your flight status in case of any delays so you can guarantee your driver will be on time, greeting you when you land - eliminating any waiting times. One of the main benefits is the sheer convenience of not having to figure out how to get from a drop-off point to your hotel, since your driver will drive you directly to your accommodation in the city.

2. Airport Shuttle Buses
Let's move on to one of the most popular ways to travel from KEF to Downtown Reykjavík - Shuttle Buses. These airport buses in Iceland run frequently and cater specifically to airport passengers.
Key Features
- Frequency: Shuttle buses generally run every 30-45 minutes to coincide with flight arrivals and departures.
- Duration: The ride takes around 1 hour depending on traffic and drop-off locations.
- Drop-off: Shuttle buses have specific drop-off locations where you can then grab a taxi to your hotel.
Pricing
The local airport shuttle buses are priced similarly and you can expect a price of a one-way ticket to be around $27 USD. With a 5-10% discount for return trips booked in advance.
Shuttle Bus Pros
- Affordable for solo travelers.
- Can book last minute at the airport.
- Wifi on most buses.
Shuttle Bus Cons
- Not private.
- Slightly longer travel time due to multiple stops.
- Added cost of transport from drop-off spots to hotel.
Flybus by Reykjavík Excursions - Recommended Local Provider
Flybus, operated by Reykjavík Excursions, is one of the most budget friendly options for airport transfers from Keflavík to Reykjavík. Their shuttle buses are timed to leave approximately 35-40 minutes after each flight arrives, and they adjust their schedule if there are any flight delays. So usually, you can find a Flybus waiting outside the terminal.
The company aims to be as flexible as possible, which is why your ticket is valid for any departure, so if you miss one bus, you can catch the next.
Once you’ve grabbed your bags, head straight to the bus to avoid long lines, as it can get crowded during peak hours.
- Note: There are luggage limits (2 large bags per person) and an added cost for extra bags and odd-size baggage.
Flybus by Reykjavík Excursions offers two fare options Flybus and Flybus+. Here's the main difference between the two.
Flybus to BSI Terminal: This direct transfer is to the BSI bus terminal in Reykjavík with optional stops at Hotel Viking in Hafnarfjörður and Aktu Taktu in Garðabær. It takes around 45 minutes and is ideal for travelers staying near the BSI terminal or who plan to explore the city on foot.
Flybus+ Hotel Drop-Off Option: Flybus+ adds a small cost to ensure a hotel drop-off. First, you’ll take the bus to BSI Terminal, then switch to a smaller bus for drop-off at most hotels and guesthouses. The duration is from 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on your hotel location. A thing to note is that parts of downtown Reykjavík have restricted bus zones, you may be dropped off at a nearby designated bus stop rather than directly at your hotel entrance.
You can book Flybus for your return journey to the airport as well. If you opt for hotel pick-up, double-check your voucher for specific instructions — sometimes the pick-up is at a nearby bus stop rather than right at your hotel.
Airport Direct by Gray Line - Recommended Local Provider
Gray Line’s Airport Direct service offers a similar experience to Flybus, with a few key differences. Their main bus terminal is farther from the city center than the Flybus Terminal, but they have two other more convenient drop off locations. Plus, you can opt in for a hotel drop off for a small added cost, usually around $10 USD
Standard Option: Booking a standard option you can choose from these three drop-off locations:
- Gray Line Bus Terminal: Klettagarður 4 104, 104 Reykjavík, Iceland
- Reykjavík Terminal: Skógarhlíð 10, 105 Reykjavík, Iceland
- Hamraborg Bus Stop: Hamraborg, 200 Kópavogur, Iceland
SmartBus Option: Your second option is SmartBus, a premium option that includes hotel drop-off. You take the bus to the Gray Line Bus Terminal where smaller shuttles or minivans take you from the terminal to your accommodation.
- Important Note: When booking, you’ll need to select a specific bus departure time for your trip from the airport. If your flight is delayed, visit the Gray Line desk to change to the next available bus — this is usually a quick process.
Both Flybus and Airport Direct provide reliable, easy transportation options, but the best choice for you may depend on your accommodation location and personal preferences. If you want a direct, no-fuss journey with clear transfer steps, Airport Direct’s hotel pick-up option is a great choice. However, Flybus has the edge with a more centrally located terminal and seamless response to delayed flights.
Insider Tip for Shuttle Buses
If you’re staying at a hotel, Airbnb or guesthouse (wherever you've booked), double-check if there is a shuttle stop nearby, or if you’ll need to call a taxi for transfer to your hotel, or opt in for a hotel drop off service with the shuttle bus company.
The weather in Iceland is not always optimal, even for a short stroll.

3. Rental Car
If you're planning to explore beyond Reykjavik and want the freedom to travel at your own pace, renting a car directly from Keflavík Airport is an excellent option. This method allows you to soak in Iceland’s stunning landscapes from the moment you leave the terminal, giving you the flexibility to make scenic stops along the way.
It's complete freedom for the traveler who wants to change their plans on a whim and explore on their own schedule.
Driving from KEF to Reykjavík
Driving from the airport to Reykjavik takes about 45 minutes via Route 41 (Reykjanesbraut). The road is well maintained and easy to navigate, though conditions can become tricky in winter due to snow and ice. Just make sure to check the weather forecast and opt for a 4x4 vehicle for your own safety if visiting during the colder months.
Rental Companies at Keflavík Airport
There are four reputable car rental companies located within the airport terminal at Keflavík International Airport. However, car rental companies do offer services with the option of a self-service key pick up at the airport, free shuttles to nearby offices or other means of getting you to your rental car.
- Europcar: Offers a wide selection of vehicles, from economy to 4x4s for Iceland’s rugged terrain.
- Hertz Iceland: A global brand with a wide range of vehicle options and flexible rental terms.
- Avis: Reliable service with options for short- and long-term rentals.
- Budget: Known for affordable rates and convenient pick-up within the terminal.
Pricing and Costs
Renting a car at Keflavík Airport involves several costs that are important to keep in mind when planning your trip. The daily rental price for a standard economy vehicle typically starts at around $90 USD. Prices can increase significantly during peak seasons or if you choose larger vehicles, such as SUVs or 4x4s, which are ideal for Iceland's rugged terrain.
In addition to the rental fee, you should factor in fuel costs, as gasoline in Iceland averages around $2 USD per liter (roughly $9 per gallon).
Many rental companies also offer optional insurance add-ons, such as gravel protection or sand and ash coverage, which can be a smart investment given Iceland's unique landscape. There are also additional fees for an extra driver.
Finally note that some companies may offer unlimited mileage, while others have restrictions, so be sure to read the terms carefully to avoid unexpected fees.
Pros & Cons of Rental Cars
The biggest advantage of renting a car is the flexibility to create your own itinerary and take spontaneous detours. If you plan to visit popular sites like the Blue Lagoon or the Golden Circle, having a rental car saves you time and makes your trip more convenient.
However, rental cars can be costly if you’re only traveling between Keflavík and Reykjavik for a short trip. Additionally, parking in downtown Reykjavik can be challenging and expensive.
Insider Tip for Renting a Car
Book your rental car well in advance, especially during the summer months when demand is high, and don't forget to read the small print about milage fees. Also, consider downloading a navigation app with offline maps to help guide you in areas with limited cell service.
Remember that to rent a car most providers require
- A credit card (some do not accept debit cards)
- Valid drivers license
- 20+ years of age (often higher for larger vehicles)

4. Taxi from KEF to Reykjavík Downtown
Taxis are generally the least cost-effective way to travel from Keflavík Airport to Reykjavík city center. While taxis are available 24/7 at Keflavík Airport and offer a private, direct ride to Reykjavík, they are very expensive. Now unlike other private transfers, like Airport Shuttle Iceland, you don't know your expenses upfront and because the distance it quite big you can expect to pay over 250 USD for a taxi ride from KEF to Reykjavik city center.
Pricing
A taxi ride from Keflavík to Reykjavík can cost over 250 USD. Many travelers report paying closer to the higher end of that range, especially during off-hours or holidays. Since the fare is metered, there’s no way to confirm the exact price in advance unless prearranged with a private service.
You can read all about how much a taxi pcosts from KEF airport to Reykjavík.
Pros and Cons
Pros of rental cars:
- Private and direct service.
- Convenient for those with heavy luggage or odd-hour arrivals.
Cons of rental cars:
- Extremely expensive compared to other options.
- No guaranteed upfront pricing.
Does Iceland have Uber or other transportation apps?
There are no ride-sharing services like Uber or Lyft in Iceland, so if you prefer a guaranteed price and more transparency, consider a private transfer instead.
Insider Tip
If you're traveling in a group, splitting the fare can make the cost slightly more reasonable even though you cannot be sure of the final cost. Also, be sure to confirm whether your taxi accepts all major credit cards to avoid any inconvenience. Usually this is not a problem in Iceland.

5. Public Bus (Strætó)
Strætó is the least time-efficient way to travel from Keflavík Airport to Reykjavík city center.
However, if you're traveling on a budget and don’t mind a bit of adventure, Iceland’s public bus system, Strætó, offers a cost-effective way to reach Reykjavík. While it may not be the quickest or most direct route, it's one way to save money and get a sense of local life.
The key route to know is Bus #55, which connects Keflavík Airport to the main bus terminal (BSÍ) in downtown Reykjavík. The journey takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes, making around 15 stops along the way.
How It Works
To catch the bus, head to the designated Stræto bus stop outside the airport terminal. Tickets can be purchased through the Stræto app, directly from the driver in cash, or by tapping your card or phone (a new feature as of late 2024). Keep in mind that the buses follow a set schedule and are less frequent, particularly on weekends. Here you can find the Route 55 schedule and it's important to note that not all Route 55 departure times go all the way to BSÍ bus terminal in the city center.
Pricing and Practical Info
A one-way ticket costs approximately about $17 USD. This makes the Strætó bus the most budget-friendly option for travelers. However, there’s limited space for large luggage, so it’s important to pack smart. If you’re traveling with oversized bags, you may find this option inconvenient. Drivers are also allowed to deny service to visitors with luggage that might inconvenience other passengers.
Pros and Cons
One of the main perks of taking the public bus is the affordability — perfect for backpackers or independent travelers. However, it’s not a door-to-door service. You’ll likely need to walk from the main terminal or transfer to another bus to reach your accommodation. Additionally, the buses don’t operate late at night, so if your flight lands during off-hours, you’ll need an alternative.
Pros
- Budget friendly.
- Affordable way to see areas of the city you otherwise might not.
Cons
- Strict departure times from 6.20am - 6.45pm
- Not all departure times reach the city center.
- Double the normal travel time.
Insider Tip
Plan ahead by checking the schedule online or through the app. This ensures you don’t miss the bus and helps you coordinate your connection times if you’re catching another bus in Reykjavík.
Extra: Private Driver - Make a day of it!
If you're not in a hurry to get to the city and would like to start your Iceland adventure as soon as you land, consider booking a Private Driver Tour starting at the airport to make the most of your day. You can choose to stay on the Reykjanes Peninsula and discover sights like Kleifarvatn and Krýsuvík, or head straight to the famous Golden Circle, or travel even further for a full day at the South Coast where you'll discover the iconic waterfalls and the black sand beaches.
This option is great for families, small groups and Stopover travelers who want to make the most of their time and enjoy discovering sights on their own schedule.
Blue Lagoon Transfers
Many travelers plan a visit to the Blue Lagoon right after landing in Iceland, and I highly recommend taking a relaxing soak. Also, because it's super conveniently located only 20 minutes from Keflavík Airport whereas driving from Reykjavík to the Blue Lagoon takes +40 minutes as the lagoon is located further south on the peninsula.
So, by visiting when you land, you're really making the most of your time. That's if you have a car!
If you have a rental car, the drive to the Blue Lagoon is straightforward and allows you to be flexible with your schedule. This is the easiest option for those who want to combine their visit with other stops nearby including Kleifarvatn, Seltún, or the many active volcano sites of the last years on the Reykjanes Peninsula.
However, and this is something I recommend to anyone without their own car, is to combine their private transfer with a stop at the Blue Lagoon. Private transfers are by far the most convenient way to reach the Blue Lagoon from the airport. These services provide direct transportation and the best part...
... the driver waits while you have a relaxing time and keeps your luggage safely stored in the car!
Pre-Book your Private Airport Shuttle with Blue Lagoon
Insider Tip
Keep in mind that any transportation service to the Blue Lagoon does not include admission tickets. Blue Lagoon entry spots fill up quickly, so it’s essential to book your tickets well in advance to avoid disappointment.
Pro Tip
Due to nearby volcanic activity, the Blue Lagoon may close temporarily with little prior notice. If you prefer a more predictable option for planning your trip, consider reserving a visit to the Sky Lagoon instead — although it doesn't offer the same blue waters it offers a similar experience with stunning ocean views and is conveniently located in the Reykjavík capital area.
So, what are the best ways to get from Keflavík International Airport to Downtown Reykjavík?
My two recommended options are the Airport Shuttle Iceland private transfer for ultimate convenience and good service, especially for groups of 3-18 people, and the Shuttle Buses, Flybus or Gray Line, for budget conscious solo travelers.
If you're looking to stop at the Blue Lagoon you can read these 4 ways to get from Keflavík Airport to the Blue Lagoon, or this piece on Getting from Keflavík to Vík í Mýrdal if you're heading along the south coast.
