Why is BSÍ Bus Terminal Important?
Reykjavík BSÍ bus terminal is an important connection for visitors in Iceland. It's the official Flybus bus terminal, an airport shuttle bus operated by Reykjavík Excursions. The terminal also has a tourist information service desk operated by Reykjavík Excursions, and due to traffic restrictions in the city center (est. 2017) the terminal also serves as a pick-up and drop-off point for many tour companies.
Connecting Reykjavík and Keflavík Airport
As mentioned before the BSÍ is the official bus terminal for Flybus. Their shuttles run like clockwork, connecting travelers to Keflavík Airport in about 45 minutes. The buses operate around flight schedules, meaning you won’t be stranded even if your flights at an ungodly hour. Tickets can be purchased in advance online, through Reykjavík Excursions, or at the terminal itself.
The terminal is also a pick-up and drop-off point for many tour companies and shared shuttle services.
How to Get to BSÍ Bus Terminal from Keflavík Airport
Travelers have two major options for getting to BSÍ from Keflavík Airport Flybus and Airport Shuttle Iceland, a private airport shuttle service.
Airport Shuttle Iceland: ASI offers door-to-door service if you need to get to BSÍ, be it for collecting a rental car or joining a tour. If you prioritize comfort, privacy, and convenience, Airport Shuttle Iceland by Snæland Travel is the standout choice. This service offers private transfers with door-to-door drop-offs at your accommodation. Drivers monitor flight schedules to adjust for delays, ensuring a stress-free experience. With no hidden fees, luggage limits, or shared passenger stops, Airport Shuttle Iceland is particularly ideal for families or groups. This service also allows for customizable experiences, such as adding a stop at the Blue Lagoon, where the driver waits with your luggage safely stored in the vehicle. Costs typically start at $170 USD depending on vehicle size.
Key Features:
- Approximately 45-minute journey.
- Drivers meet you at the arrivals hall with a personalized sign.
- Luggage assistance provided.
- Upfront pricing with no surprise fees.
Benefits:
- Private transfers ensure no waiting or sharing.
- Immediate booking confirmation.
- 5% return fare discount.
- Flexibility around flight delays and additional luggage.
- Perfect for groups, families, or travelers with tight schedules.
Flybus by Reykjavík Excursions: A popular and budget-friendly airport bus choice, Flybus offers frequent departures timed with incoming flights. Tickets can be purchased online or in person at the airport and BSÍ bus terminal. When you book you have two options:
Direct to BSÍ: The fastest route to the terminal, ideal for travelers exploring the city on foot.
Flybus+: Includes a transfer to a smaller vehicle for hotel drop-offs (if your accommodation is in a restricted zone, you’ll be taken to the nearest designated bus stop). This option may involve some walking from drop-off points to your accommodation.
Key Features:
- Shuttle buses leave approximately 35–40 minutes after each flights arrive in Iceland.
- Tickets are valid for any departure, so no need to worry about missing a specific bus.
- Luggage limits apply: two large bags per person, with extra fees for additional or oversized baggage.
Benefits:

If you're wondering which option to choose I recommend to opt for Airport Shuttle Iceland if you want privacy, convenience, and an easy door-to-door experience. However, choose Flybus if you’re a budget-first or solo traveler, and don’t mind walking from designated drop-off points to your accommodation.
A Designated Pick-Up Stop
Since summer 2017, a new law prohibits buses, both large and small, from entering the city center, affecting many hotels and their guests. To accommodate this, the city has set up bus stops at various locations in and around the city center. Due to these restrictions, a hotel pick-up service may not be able to pick you up at the doorsteps of your hotel, instead you'll need to go to the nearest bus stop. So, if you are joining a scheduled tour or a shared airport shuttle it's worth keeping in mind that it may not be a doorstep pick-up.
BSÍ serves as a pick-up spot for the following hotels (please note that the list may not be exhausted) and you should always confirm with your provider.
- Guesthouse Anna
- Guesthouse Baldursbrá – Laufásvegur 41
- Guesthouse Baldursbrá – Tjarnargata 46
- Guesthouse Galtafell
- Guesthouse Lena
- Hótel Holt
- Travel Inn
- Student Hostel

A Short History
BSÍ, which stands for "Bifreiðastöð Íslands" (Automobile Station of Iceland), has roots stretching back to the 1930s. However, the current building was constructed in 1965 and quickly became a pivotal hub for Iceland’s transportation network. It served as more than just a bus terminal—it was a social meeting point and a late-night culinary hotspot.
One of its most famous features was the restaurant Mýrin Mathús, beloved for its signature dish "Sviðakjammi," or boiled sheep’s head, often enjoyed with a chilled Coca-Cola. This unique dish was a favorite among locals and late-night revelers, as BSÍ was one of the few places in Reykjavík open into the early hours. Though the original restaurant has closed, the dish remains a nostalgic symbol of Icelandic street food culture.
Over the decades, BSÍ has evolved to meet the needs of modern travelers. While the sheep’s head and Coke combo may be a thing of the past, the terminal continues to hold a special place in Reykjavík’s history, blending its traditional roots with contemporary services. Today, it stands as a testament to Iceland’s commitment to connectivity and hospitality.
